Training
Sailing is enjoyed by many as both a sport and a lifelong pastime. GSSC’s Sailing School promotes the continued development of sailing skills from beginner through advanced levels. Our programs are led by CANSail Level 3–4 certified instructors and delivered from the Clubhouse and on the water using Topper Topaz and Optimist dinghy sailboats.
In 2025, the Club recorded its longest operating season to date — beginning with Race Team practice on June 14 and concluding with the Frosty Pumpkin Regatta on October 5 — for a total of 16 weeks on the water.
Sailing School Programs
Programs are open to children and adults from late June through mid-August.
-
Youth programs are offered in camp-style daytime sessions, running one to two weeks
-
Older teenagers and adults can register for evening and weekend courses
CANSail programming emphasizes time on the water in a safe, fun, and active learning environment, with less time spent in the classroom. Sailors build skills through age- and stage-appropriate challenges designed to foster confidence and a lifelong enjoyment of sailing.
Classes take place at the Great Slave Sailing Club, adjacent to the Giant Mine Boat Launch on the old Highway 4 past the Ski Club.
Courses for the 2026 season will open for booking in May 2026.

Youth Race Team
The GSSC Youth Race Team was established in 2024 to provide additional training focused on racing rules, tactics, and competition preparation for youth sailors interested in attending regattas. Participation is by invitation only and subject to space availability.
Please email training@greatslavesailingclub.com to express interest.
Thank you!
In 2025, a Laser sailboat was generously donated to the Sailing Club by Terry and Joanna Pamplin, in memory of David Russell, an avid Laser sailor. This donation allows race team youth to train on the same class of boat used at southern regattas. We are sincerely grateful for this meaningful contribution.
