Cruising
Cruising is a foundational part of life at the Great Slave Sailing Club. Long before organized racing and formal instruction, members gathered to explore the remote and remarkable waters of Great Slave Lake together. That spirit continues today through club-organized cruising and social sailing opportunities that emphasize seamanship, shared experience, and community.
Club Cruising at GSSC
Throughout the sailing season, GSSC members participate in day sails, flotillas, and overnight gatherings that range from relaxed social outings to longer group cruises. These events provide opportunities to explore beyond Back Bay and Yellowknife Bay, build confidence on the water, and connect with fellow members in a supportive and welcoming environment.
Club-organized cruising is designed to be inclusive, social, and flexible. Participation can be as casual or as committed as members choose.
Cruising activities may include:
-
Group day sails and flotillas
-
Weekend or overnight gatherings at anchor
-
Shared meals, brunches, and BBQs on the water
-
Informal rendezvous points for members heading out or returning from longer trips
These outings are well suited to members who are newer to cruising as well as those with extensive experience on Great Slave Lake.
Where We Go
Common cruising destinations include Mackenzie Island, Romance Harbour (West Mirage Islands), Moose Bay, Horseshoe Bay, and other well-known anchorages throughout the North and East Arms. These locations serve as natural gathering points for members to meet, share meals, and spend time together on the water.
Safety and Preparation
Cruising on Great Slave Lake requires preparation, situational awareness, and respect for rapidly changing conditions. Club cruising emphasizes good seamanship, clear communication, and looking out for one another.
Members are encouraged to:
-
Ensure their vessels are appropriately equipped and maintained
-
Brief crews before departure
-
File a sail plan and inform a trusted contact of intended routes and timing
-
Monitor weather and conditions throughout their trip

Cruising Knowledge and Local Expertise
GSSC benefits from decades of local cruising knowledge shared by its members. A key reference for exploring Great Slave Lake is A Guide to Great Slave Lake Bays and Anchorages by Ian Girvan (published by MSS Ltd.), along with updates and notes contributed by experienced sailors over the years.
Members are encouraged to share cruising stories, observations, and lessons learned to help build and preserve the Club’s collective knowledge of the lake.
To contribute, please contact the Communications Director.
Official nautical charts for Great Slave Lake and surrounding waters are available at MSS Ltd. or by searching Maps Canada.
